NON PROFIT BOARD DEVELOPMENT

Building an effective board is similar to creating a winning sports team. Recruiting talented players that fit the organization’s culture and training them to play their best are key ingredients. An effective board provides a foundation for the mission and vision of the organization and a framework of expectations that make it possible for the staff and volunteers to focus on the day-to-day tasks of running the organization. A strong board assists nonprofit organizations in successfully meeting both client and community needs. We provide the following assistance to non profits:

• Board Member Selection and Recruitment
• Board Member Orientation
• Training and Development (for Board and Staff)
• Strategic and Long-Range Planning
• Fund Raising Plan Development
• By Laws Development

LONG-RANGE STRATEGIC PLANNING OR CHURCH DEVELOPMENT PLANNING

Developing a long-range plan is an intensive, time-consuming, and extremely thought-provoking process. However, a strategic plan need not take several months to complete. We have devised a process that allows a complete plan -- including the vision, mission, strategic initiatives, goals, and action steps – to be developed in less than six months. This process requires focus, open-mindedness, punctuality, preparation, readiness, and dedication on the part of all those who are to be involved in the planning process.

FACILITATION

What is “facilitation” and a “facilitator”? “Facility” is defined as something that promotes the ease of an action, operation, or course of conduct. A facilitator is someone who assists a group in accomplishing its task. The facilitator does this by taking over the “process” work and letting the group members concentrate on the substantive discussion. The facilitator is part of the group but removed from it.

The normal situation in an organization is not to have an outside facilitator. Instead one of the group members, or the chairperson, tries to guide the discussion while attempting to be an active participant in the group’s discussion. Typically, this selected facilitator will be overwhelmed by the difficulty of trying to concentrate on getting input from everyone, staying focused on what is being said so that he or she can help the group see where it may be nearing consensus, and then trying to offer up ideas and opinions of their own.

At Human Capital Developers we are trained in the art of facilitation. If we do our jobs well, ultimately we blend into the background while the group’s accomplishments become better than they would have initially thought possible.

Types of Facilitation

• Stakeholder Meetings
• Planning and Goal-setting Retreats
• Focus groups
• Sensitive Topics Discussions
• Strategic Planning Meetings
• Public Meetings
• General Data-gathering Sessions

We will compile the data gathered and prepare a written draft report for approval, normally within three weeks following the final facilitated session. All client information will be held in the strictest confidence.
